Jamesetta Hawkins wurde am 25. Januar 1938 in Los Angeles geboren als Tochter eines minderjährigen Partygirls und eines unbekannten Vaters. Sie wuchs auf bei verschiedenen Verwandten und Pflegeeltern, die ihr musikalisches Talent erkannten und schon mit fünf Jahren beim örtlichen Baptistenchor anmeldeten. Dort wurde ihre Stimme geschult, und bald war sie eine beliebte Solosängerin des Chors.

Mit zwölf zog Jamesetta nach San Francisco zu ihrer leiblichen Mutter zurück und war kurz davor, in die Jugendkriminalität abzugleiten. Ihre Rettung war die Doo-Wop-Gruppe The Creolettes, die sie mit Freundinnen gründete und die 1950 vom bekannten Bandleader und Radio-DJ Johnny Otis entdeckt und für Plattenaufnahmen an Modern Records vermittelt wurde. Otis gab Jamesetta auch ihren Künstlernamen Etta James. Die erste Aufnahme Roll with me, Henry wurde 1955 ein kleinerer Hit. Nach weiteren Aufnahmen trennte sich die Gruppe, und Etta James hatte solo weitere Aufnahmen und Clubtouren, bis 1960 ihr Vertrag mit Modern Records auslief.

Etta unterschrieb einen neuen Vertrag beim großen Chicagoer Blues-Label Chess Records, welches für seinen Jazz-Ableger Argo (später Cadet) eine Sängerin suchte, die den raubeinigen Blues-Veteranen Muddy Waters, Howlin' Wolf und Little Walter Paroli bieten konnte. Ihr erstes Solo-Album At Last! wurde 1961 ein Hit und enthält mehrere noch heute bewunderte Klassiker. Danach erschienen fast jährlich neue Alben, doch ihre beginnende Heroinabhängigkeit, unglückliche Liebesbeziehungen und Tantiemen-Streitereien mit der Plattenfirma überschatteten Ettas Erfolg. Ende 1967 schickte Leonard Chess die Sängerin vom Hexenkessel Chicago in das verschlafene Südstaaten-Dorf Muscle Shoals, wo Etta James im berühmten Fame-Studio ihr vielleicht bestes Album Tell Mama aufnahm.

1969 wurde Chess Records nach dem Tod des Firmenchefs an den Magnetbandhersteller GRT verkauft, und die nun fehlende persönliche Betreuung Ettas schlug sich in immer stärkerer Drogenabhängigkeit und durch Geldprobleme verursachte Beschaffungskriminalität wieder. 1973 begann sie einen gerichtlich verordneten Entzug, unternahm wie zu Beginn ihrer Karriere Touren durch kleine Clubs und veröffentlichte Alben auf Chess und später Warner Bros., wo sie vom früheren Atlantic-Verantwortlichen Jerry Wexler produziert wurde.

Doch die Drogen ließen sie auf Jahre hinaus nicht los, bis sie 1988 erneut einen Entzug unternahm, diesmal erfolgreich. Sie nahm wieder vermehrt Alben auf (hauptsächlich für Island und Private) und ging auf Festival-Tourneen. Ihr letztes Album The Dreamer erschien im November 2011 auf dem Jazzlabel Verve. Zwei Monate später erlag Etta James ihrer Leukämie und starb am 20. Januar 2012. Heute wäre sie 77 Jahre alt geworden.
