Nina Simone, oder mit bürgerlichem Namen Eunice Kathleen, Waymon wurde am 21 Februar 1933 in Tryon (North Carolina) geboren. Sie war das sechste von acht Kindern einer Methodistenpredigerin und eines Handwerkers. Bereits im Alter von vier Jahren begann sie mit dem Klavierspielen. Nach einem Studium an der renommierten Juilliard School in New York City wollte sie ihre Ausbildung in Philadelphia am Curtis Institute of Music abschließen, wurde jedoch aus rassistischen Gründen nicht zugelassen. Über einen Job als Klavierlehrerin kam Nina Simone zum Gesang, wobei sie von Anfang an eigene Stücke improvisierte.

1957 veröffentlichte sie in New York ihr erstes Album „Little Girl Blue“ oder auch bekannt unter „Jazz as played in an Exclusive Side Street Club“ auf Bethlehem Records (). Die Singleauskopplung “I loves you Porgy“ – “He needs me”, Platz 13 der Rythem and Blues Charts wurde bis zum Sommer 1959 über eine millionen mal verkauft. Nach der Veröffentlichung ihres Albums „And Her Friends“ 1959, wechselte die „Hohepriesterin des Souls“ zum Label Colpix, unter welchem sie bis 1964 insgesamt sechs Studio- und vier Livealben veröffentlichte.

1961 heirate sie nach Don Ross ihren zweiten Ehemann Andy Stroud, mit welchem sie ein Jahr später ihre Tochter Lisa Celeste Stroud bekam. Andy Stroud managte die Künstlerin bis zur Scheidung 1970.

1964 wurden Nina Simon vom Label Philips abgeworben, auf welchem sie in drei Jahren weitere sieben Alben veröffentlichte. Während der Zusammenarbeit mit Philips schrieb Nina ihren ersten Protestsong "Mississippi Goddam!" als Reaktion auf die Ermordung von Medgar Evers in Mississippi im Juni 1963. Mit weiteren Songs wie z.B. To Be Young, Gifted, and Black (Liedtext von Weldon Irvine) wurde sie zu einer der musikalischen Leitfiguren der US-amerikanischen Bürgerrechtsbewegung.

Ab 1966 sang Nina unter dem Label RCA. Durch den von ihrem Ehemann abgeschlossene Deal verbrachte sie die längste Zeit (bis 1973) bei einem amerikanischen Plattenlabel. In der Zeit vom Sommer 1968 bis 1969 produzierte Andy Stroud auch ihre Aufnahmen. Darunter befindet sich auch das Emmy-nominierte Tribut Album „Nuff Said“, das komplett dem Tod von Martin Luther King Jr. gewidmet ist und als eines ihrer gelungensten gilt.

Aufgrund einer Empfehlung von Miriam Makeba suchte Nina ihre Bestimmung in Afrika und unternahm Europatourneen.
Ihr Album Baltimore (1978) wurde von der Kritik gelobt, verkaufte sich aber zunächst schlecht. In den 1980ern spielte sie regelmäßig im Jazzclub von Ronnie Scott in London und nahm dort auch das Album Live at Ronny Scott‘s auf.
In den europäischen Jahren folgten noch mehrere Alben auf verschiedenen Labels.Ihre Autobiografie I Put a Spell on You erschien 1992, ihr letztes reguläres Album 1993. Im gleichen Jahr zog sie nach Südfrankreich, wo sie zehn Jahre lebte und 2003 nach langem Krebsleiden starb.
